Description
Photograph caption dated December 15, 1986 reads, "Five Southern Pacific railroad freight cars, two carrying highly explosive chemicals, derailed in Compton this morning, forcing the evacuation of a 12-block area around the Civic Center. Authorities said there were no injuries and expected the train wreck to be cleared by 8 this evening. Compton fire Capt. Nelson King said the trail derailed because of "mechanical failure" shortly before 7 a.m. near Compton Boulevard and Willowbrook Avenue. The potential danger forced the closure of the Civic Center, including the police station, city hall, post office, county court house and an adjacent shopping mall, authorities said. They were concerned about a train tank holding 30,000 gallons of butane and another tank with 200 to 1,000 gallons of ether."
