Title supplied by cataloger. Photograph caption dated May 2, 1981 reads, "Millions around the world yesterday observed May Day - the international holiday of organized labor - in celebrations that ranged from Moscow's colorful but regimented annual procession through Red Square, at top, to a tea ceremony for model laborers hosted by Taiwan President Chiang Ching-kuo. In Warsaw, 50,000 people marched to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Poland's Communist leaders joined them. Marchers in Tokyo, middle, carry a float of the U.S. nuclear submarine George Washington - which hit and sank a Japanese freighter - with the heads of Ronald Reagan and Japanese Premier Suzuki attached and a banner protesting a political settlement of the incident. Police and demonstrators clashed in Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, Spain and Iran. In Los Angeles, at bottom, May Day was observed in a peaceful way, with about three times as many police officers as demonstrators attending a march sponsored by the Revolutionary Communist Party. Marchers went through downtown, over to MacArthur Park and back again without any arrests or violence. Meanwhile, the governments of the United States and Washington, D.C., agreed to pay $2.2 million to almost 1,000 persons arrested on the Capitol steps during a 1971 anti-war protest on May Day."
