Interview with Peter F. Drucker on effectively managing one’s boss. Drucker begins the interview discussing the importance of subordinates learning how to manage their supervisors in the workplace, rather than just complaining about them. He stresses the human quality of managers and how essential it is to recognize that they are imperfect. Drucker then relates how employees can approach managing their superiors by first understanding what type of person they are working with and grasping that that person is set in their ways and unchangeable. He goes on to talk about the importance of language – choosing productive words and avoiding words that trigger a negative reaction in one’s superiors – and the essentialness of employees communicating their plans and progress to their superiors so that they are never surprised. Finally, Drucker and the interviewer continue on to discuss how to deal with corrupt or incompetent supervisors, and the importance of meetings and performance appraisal sessions as constructive tools in employee-manager relationships.
