Description
This unlacquered paulownia box is designed to hold both a ceramic caddy for thick tea (chaire) and lacquered caddy for thick tea (natsume) for the satsubako tea procedure (temae), one of a set of four orally transmitted temae. When a guest presents the host with an unexpected gift of thick tea, the host's tea is placed in the chaire (clothed in a shifuku) and the gift tea in the natsume, which is clothed in an small silk bag (otsubukuro) or a fukusa. During the temae, there are two makings of thick tea (koicha): the host's tea is served, followed by the gift tea. The box is seen here with a chaire (in shifuku) and natsume (in otsubukuro) as they would appear for satsubako.
