Description
Beatty's American Theater on First Street. From left to right: Band leader Bill Lake with motorcycle policemen Bill Emig and Tony Russo. Policemen in the background: Al Laederich, Andy McCarron, Theo Swanson, Lloyd Buffington, and Tom Short. Pharaoh the Great has just been awarded the key to the city. [Note: The actor playing "Pharaoh" is dressed in garments traditional to the Indian subcontinent: long Sherwani satin jacket, churidar trousers, and leather woven sandals. He is also wearing a jeweled and feathered turban on his head. It is unclear whether the actor is South Asian himself or playing "brown." ] Featured in the "City with a Past" exhibit with caption, "Show opening at Beatty's American Theatre on First Street. San Jose was a regular stop on the theater circuit, featuring such personalities as Lionel Barrymore and Sarah Bernhardt."
