Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated October 22, 1956 reads, "Milestone in tunneling - One of new Southern Pacific diesel equipped trains rolls through Newhall tunnel at edge of San Fernando Valley. Tunnel was completed in 1876 at cost of $2,000,00 and was considered one of the greatest engineering feats of era. Hundreds of Chinese laborers lost their lives in frequent landslides. Today, tunnel goes under Golden State Freeway and into Newhall. Giant undertaking took one year to build and a construction town sprang up at tunnel entrance now covered by sagebush."; See images #00139211 through #00139218 for all photos in this series.
