Description
Photograph of bookshelves in the library of Mission San Juan Capistrano, California, ca.1890. Books sit (some upright, some flat) on eleven shelves of the wooden bookcase which is in a state of disrepair. A wave-shaped wooden decoration forms part of the lower part of the bookcase. A large book sits upright partially splayed open on the wooden floor leaning against a lower shelf. The plaster wall behind the bookcase is cracked. Many titles are legible on the spines of the old well-used books including: "Vallens juris canonici", "Parras regulare de lndias, 2", "Cuniliati theologiae moralis, 1", "Cuniliati theologiae moralis, 2", "Dictionaire historique I", .... The mission was built in the late 18th century.
"Ancient mission library still intact in upstairs room over Padre Mut's living quarters in 1880. The inventory taken in 1834 on the secularization of this ex-mission listed 209 volumes all of which were still present when this photograph was taken. The library was since looted and only a few books remain." -- unknown author.
