Description
The Pioneer Baking Company at 3226 Montgomery Street is captured in this February 18, 1929, photograph. A few years prior to the photograph, the company spent 25,000 dollars to improve facilities and roll out a new type of bread made from “sponge” dough that was intended to have a more homemade type of consistency than most breads on the market at the time. By 1927, Sacramento’s three wholesale bakeries were employing 350 workers and churning out nearly 700,000 loaves of bread a week. For its efforts, Pioneer was awarded the 1932 Harry M. Freer trophy, given to the best bread producer of 200 companies nationwide.
