Chandler writes about his financial losses, and a visit that he made to a fortune teller. He writes what an “Old Fortune Teller” told him regarding his past and future. He recounts the excitement of the city on Lee’s surrender to Grant, but holds some doubt of it because “the wires don’t always bring the truth.” Notations in pencil on the first page at the top read: “Hard times – ‘My luck runs wild.’ ‘Our city crazy with excitement on account of Lee’s surrender to Grant!’” Pencil marks highlight certain parts of the text pertaining to the title.
