The razing of the historic Broadway Tunnel moved ever closer to completion September 29, 1949, as steam shovels and bulldozers hoisted and pushed debris out of the way. The famed arch will soon be a thing of the past, and the new freeway will take its place as a modern web of highways leading to and from the civic center.
