A neighborhood meeting is being held at the Toberman House in support of an alternative to the leveling of the last hill of old San Pedro. While San Pedro is built on a hillside, the old town area had several hills. Only one is left, Knoll Hill, which the Los Angeles Harbor Department plans to turn into a container yard. Citizens formed an ad hoc committee, which is proposing a usage that would be parkland oriented. Toberman Settlement House, a fixture on San Pedro's Barton Hill district, is a non-profit neighborhood center providing services to low-income residents of Los Angeles. Founded in 1903 in the name of two-term Mayor James R. Toberman, Toberman house is the oldest charity in the city of Los Angeles and the oldest United Methodist mission project in the Western U.S. It was named United Way's Non-Profit Organization of the Year in 2006. Photograph dated April 2001.
