Description
Photograph of a view of Main Street looking north from Temple Street on the northwest corner, showing the old Downy Block, Los Angeles, ca.1878. Two wooden carts stand on the left side of the scene, backed by squat, shack-like looking shopfronts. A short tree stands between them and a post with some kind of railroad spike in it is partially visible in the right foreground. A ladder leans up against the eaves of the Slazard & Co. shop which advertises "wholesale" and "retail". Other legible signs include: "Harris & Jacoby. Successors to H.W. Hellman", "Oils Wall Paper", "Wines Liquors", and "M.K. Remer". Residential houses can be seen on the hill in the background.
