Photograph caption dated July 6, 1961 reads, "Trash time - Most Valley residents questioned in a spot interview objected to the city's new rubbish collection program. Among those questioned were, from left, Mrs. George Quillin, George Moon, Mrs. Michael Fellows, Carl Sandell, Jan Hellendoorn and Mrs. E. J. Johnson. The new program, which went into effect Monday, calls for a separation of garbage, metals and combined rubbish. Under the new system, cans and other metals will be picked up once every four weeks and sold to a local company. There will be no change in the collection schedule for other refuse. The combined collection of rubbish with wrapped garbage will begin in the Valley Nov. 1. More than two-thirds of those informally polled opposed the plan."
