Muhittin Acar came to the U.S. from Turkey in 1994 to pursue his Ph.D. in public administration. He did graduate work at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1994 and 1995 and received his doctorate from USC in 2001. In 2007, he became a full professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Ankara University in Turkey.
Muhittin Acar's mother, Sukriye Acar, pins gold attached to ribbons on the bride's dress during the wedding of Muhittin's best friend, Mahmut Kabukcu and his wife Sema Kabukcu in Konya, Turkey in 1994. Sukriye Acar is attending the wedding on behalf of her son who is in the United States. Gold is traditionally given to couples as economic support at weddings because money is considered an inappropriate gift. After the pinning of the gold, the bride and groom kiss everyone's hand.
