Description
1989-1230. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 18. A large dirt road stretches into the distance; on the left in the middle ground is a two story wooden structure with the sign on top "San Francisco House. 8st"; beyond there are low one story buildings and larger two and three story buildings but few; on the right side of the road in the middle distance a man rides a horse into the distance; on the right a wooden wall has carriage wheels leaned up against it; behind the wall are a couple of one story buildings with roofs over the wooden sidewalk and a carriage parked in front of a bare branched tree; behind the wooden structures is a brick two story building with a sign "U.S. Bakery" on its side; beyond is a church-looking structure with a tall belltower and above the belltower is another tall element with a round hole near the top. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "PIcture taken at the corner of 9th & Kay street. San Francisco House, at the Southwest corner of 8th & Kay street. Masonic Building in the distance, left side. St. Roses Church, right side, at the corner of 7th & Kay st. cornerstone laid in 1854, the building stood until about 1892 when the new Post-office building was erected, and completed about 1894. U.S. Bakery, erected in 1856, Schaeffer & Kiefer, pros. cor. of 8th & K street."
