Description
Wedding party in Hotel Vendome Ladies Parlor. Bride and groom are seated in the middle of the portrait. An African-American man (appears to be a waiter) stands behind them with a napkin over his arm. The bride, Maud Arques, was the daughter of Nellie G. Murphy Arques (daughter of Martin Murphy Jr.) and Joaquin R. Arques. Dr. Frasse was the son of William and Sarah Frasse of New York. Miss Evelyn Murphy was the maid of honor (daughter of Mayor B.D. Murphy, the son of Martin Murphy Jr.). The bridesmaids were Miss Mattie Taaffe, Miss Mollie Taaffe, (twins of Elizabeth Yuba Murphy Taaffe), Miss Lizzie Carroll (daughter of Mary Ann Murphy Carroll), Miss Lolita McGeoghean and Miss Mabel Arques. The best man was George Henderson, attended by Martin Murphy (s/o former Mayor Bernard D. Murphy) Clement Arques (brother of Maud Arques), Peter Donahue (S.F.), Richard Hotaling and John Enright (Enright family came to California with the Murphys). The ceremony at the Vendome Hotel was performed by Rev. Father Mahoney. Guests included parents of the bride, former Mayor of San Jose, Bernard D. Murphy, Mrs. Anna McGeoghean Murphy and uncle of the bride, Patrick W. Murphy. Martin Murphy's guest may be his fiancée, Maude Phelps, whom he married in June 1899. Maud Arques was a graduate of Santa Clara College, a womens' prep school for Notre Dame Academy in San Jose. Maude Avenue in Sunnyvale is named for Maud and Maud Avenue in Santa Margarita, as a favorite niece of Patrick W. Murphy. Dr. Irvin Frasse was a prominent medical doctor from New York with a successful practice in San Jose and helped the injured in the 1906 earthquake. See information attached to record from Sunnyvale Historical Society regarding wedding party and dates.
