Description
Image of an elevated landscape view of the town of Manchester, New Hampshire, depicting a firemen’s muster with a large crowd of spectators and firefighters with hand-pump manual fire engines gathered around the pond in Merrimack Square; a fire hose competition is visible at back left with a stream of water being shot in the air from a fire hose next to a wooden measuring pole; being shot from a fire hose at back left as part of a contest; some of the fire engines have labels including “2”, “Excelsior 3 Bangor” “Protector No. 3” “Gen Worth” “Torrent” and some the firefighters wear belts with labels including “Deluge” “Protector” “Lawrence” “[So]uth Reading” and “Alert”; the buildings visible in the background have the signs “Books” “Shirt Manufactory” “Museum” “C. Spencer & [Son Hard]ware” “B.L. Bartlett” “Eating House” and “Rowle & Co.” and the church is labeled ““Bidwell Glunn’s[?] Company at 3 [? o’clock] 15”; the scene also includes trees, American flags, dogs, women in hoop skirts, and children.

Lith. 59 Beekman St. N.Y."--text, bottom left margin. "To the Intrepid Firemen of the United States, this picture is most respectfully dedicated by the publisher Jno B. Bachelder 123 Washington St. Boston. 59 Beekman St. New York."--text, continuation of title, bottom center margin.
