Sonia Levitin discusses her book, “Room in the Heart.” She begins by explaining that the book deals with the historic events of the Nazi invasion of Denmark during World War II. To tell the story, Levitin alternates between the narratives of two young people. One character is thirteen-year-old Julie who struggles as life becomes increasingly difficult for her and her Jewish family under the Nazi occupation. The other character that narrates the book is Julie’s best friend’s brother, Niels. Niels is frustrated at his father’s supposed apathy towards the occupation and his friend Emil’s idolization of the Nazis. In response to his frustrations Niels joins the resistance. Levitin goes on to discuss her research for the novel and her work in Denmark promoting World War II remembrance. Also in this interview Levitin tells the history of the German invasion of Denmark and the resistance of its citizens as well as the rescue of Danish Jews.
