Description
According to A.E. Morrison, Sacramento County Agricultural Commissioner, the first camellias were imported from Japan by James L.L.F. Warren, a seed store proprietor, at Front and J Streets on February 7, 1852. Popularity of the camellia grew in Sacramento until the flood of 1861 and 1862, which destroyed many of the gardens near the Sacramento and American rivers. Interest waned until about 1910 when a movement was started to make Sacramento known as “The Camellia Capital”.
