Description
Image of golfer on the green waving at a biplane flying close to the ground over the San Jose Country Club. Written on reverse, "First air golf game in history." A similar image was featured on the front page of the San Jose Mercury News on Monday morning, July 30, 1923, with the caption: Golfers of Air Afford City Countless Thrills. Thousands of local residents and passing tourists spent a breathless hour yesterday afternoon while two swift army airplanes darted here and there above the golf course of the San Jose County Club in the first airplane golf match ever held on the Pacific coast, and the second anywhere. Fliers from Crissey field piloted the ships for members of the local air squadron who dropped golf balls to waiting players on the ground. The latter "holed out" in regulation fashion. Captain A. F. Herold is here shown zooming over the third green while Major George E. Sykes drops a ball to their team mate below.
