Description
Exterior view showing a paddle steamer berthed by a river bank as another boat passes by. The main mode of transportation and traded goods for the Scottish missions at Blantyre and Livingstonia were through the Zambezi, the Shire river and into Lake Nyasa. The route was controlled by the African Lakes Corporation (ALC) which was formed in Glasgow in 1877, with the shareholders also supporters of the mission. The company was run by two brothers, John and Fredrick Moir, who pioneered trade by steam boat and helped supply the mission stations. Ivory was the most important item of trade and the company went into direct competition with Arab and African slavers who used forced labour to move ivory. ❧ Album containing photographs recording a voyage up the Shire River and scenes from the Livingstonia mission.
