Description
Photograph of a panoramic view of Los Angeles showing the residence of ex-Governor Downey on Main Street north from Fourth Street, ca.1887. The view can be seen from the roof of the Westminster Hotel. Large trees are in the front yard nearly obscuring all but the roof of the house. A few horse-drawn vehicles are on the street at right, and utility poles line the street. The square tower of City Hall and a church steeple poke up above the general level of the cityscape. Legible signs include: "Salisbury Block", "J.W. Davis drugstore", "205, C.E. Donahue, fancy groceries", "Walton & Wachtel", "Woodbury's Business College, short-hand and typing", "Sullivan's thread[...], cloak [...]", "E.E. Crandall & Co., tinware, lamps, crockery, stoves, superior b[...]s, household goods", "[...] School for Dancing", and "Wallpaper".
