Photograph was edited for publication purposes Los Angeles Airways, founded in 1944, invented the term 'heliport' and was the first company to receive authority to carry mail by helicopter as well as passengers. Photograph caption dated March 17, 1956 reads, "Mid-day airmail helicopter momentarily suspends itself over North Hollywood landing circle prior to landing. This is Air Mail Route-84, nation's first air helicopter letter service in United States which gives Valley residents mail at same time the Los Angeles business man opens his at his office.
