Description
View of "The Bend" on the McCloud River near Mount Shasta. Built by Willis Polk for Charles Stetson Wheeler in 1899 as a hunting lodge. In 1902 Phoebe Hearst built her home, "Wyntoon" on adjoining land after visiting Wheeler, her lawyer, at "The Bend". In 1934, after Wheeler's death, William Randolph Hearst, Phoebe's son, bought "The Bend" as well as the rest of the Wheeler Ranch property. "The Bend" was torn down by Hearst and rebuilt by Julia Morgan to be a Gothic stone building. The Wheeler Ranch land on which this was sited was joined with the Wyntoon property totaling 50,000 acres. Note: Edward and Rosie Stuhl (see mss 150) lived on the property for many years, starting in 1911, as care takers.
