Photograph was edited for publication purposes George Lloyd Murphy was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1902. He was an American actor, singer, dancer and politician. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1944-1946, and was also a vice-president at Desilu Studios and at the Technicolor Corporation. Murphy served as a United States Senator from 1965-1971. He died in 1992. Photograph caption dated July 16, 1965 reads "Los Angeles Supervisor Warren M. Dorn, right, shows Jim Stearns, left, president of the County Supervisors Association of California, and Sen. George Murphy (R-Calif.), the five feet of regulations and red tape which each welfare worker must follow. Dorn called it a monument to bureaucratic inefficiency and waste."
