Description
Photograph of a drawing of the Bay of Monterey, with a figure on horseback, from Alexander Forbes' book, California: A History of Upper and Lower California, (London 1839), the first book on California written in English. There are two people conversing in the foreground of the picture under a large tree--a mounted man and a woman in a dress. The area around them is densely covered in foliage. In the background on the left side of the picture is a small house, while on the right side there are two ships on the water of the bay. There are mountains across the bay.
