Description
Description on reverse of photo: "At Island Mountain, a railroad maintenance station about 50 miles north of Willits, a 620-foot bridge spanned the river and immediately entered a tunnel boring through the mountain. Rails on this bridge normally stood 84-feet above the surface of the Eel, but the Christmas Week flood waters rose into the truss spans and ripped them away. One of the bridge's two 200-foot spans lies on its side in the lower left corner of this photo. Two 160-foot girder spans were also lost and a huge concrete pier was torn from its base." (Note: text on reverse of photo has conflicting dates for event: 1955-1956, and 1964.)
