Description
Photograph shows the burned ruins of the church at Mission Santa Clara. Only the outer framework of the church facade has remained. There is no roof. In front of the church stands a tall cross atop a pedestal. People stand in front of the ruins. Some figures are only blurred images.
Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded in 1777. The current location in Santa Clara is the fifth site of the Mission; work began on this site in 1822 and the church was dedicated in 1825. In 1861 the adobe facade of the church was overlaid with an Italianate Victorian facade. This church was destroyed by fire in October 1926. It was rebuilt on the same site and consecrated in 1929. The cross in front of the church is the cross erected at the first Mission Santa Clara site in 1777. This cross has stood at each subsequent mission site.
