Photograph caption dated April 13, 1939 reads, "'I didn't think I had a chance.' That's what young Bill Holden said when asked why he hadn't applied for the "Golden Boy" role. Holden has been signed to play the leading male role opposite Barbara Stanwyck in the Columbia screen version of the Clifford Odets' stage success. Signing of the youngster ends the long search for an unknown to portray one of the most coveted roles of the year. He was accidentally discovered by Rouben Mamoulian, who will direct the picture. Holden is 21 and hails from Pasadena, Calif., and has never appeared on stage or screen."
