Photo shows one of two murals, which cover the walls at the north and south ends of Dana Junior High School's cafeteria. The oil on canvas murals, measuring 8' x 42' were created by WPA artist Adrien Machefert in 1934, with the assistance of Joseph Sena and James Haggart. Titled "Life and Travels of Richard Henry Dana, Jr.", they portray early San Pedro and its harbor activity. Both show San Pedro residents, including a sizable Indian population, working beside sailors at the waterfront. Dana Junior High School, located at 1501 South Cabrillo Avenue, is named for Richard Henry Dana, and opened its doors February 6, 1928; it became Dana Middle School sometime after 1988.
