In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 23.
In the center is a two story house; there are porches on both floors supported by two columns on each floor; up stairs from the street is the first floor with the entry on the left & two floor to near ceiling windows with a decorative balustrade ending the porch in front of the two windows; on the second floor are three tall windows and a balustrade of "x" shaped sections; a triangular pediment tops the house; in front of the house on the left is a tall palm tree and other trees to its left; on the right side are hedges and another house on the far side at the right.
Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento.
"Erected in 1856. Once the home of J. Neely Johnson, 4th Gov. of California in 1856-58. Mr. Neely took the first census of Sacramento in 1850. Later the home of H.C. Kirk of Kirk, Geary. Home of Sec. of State, D.F. Douglas in 1856."
