Description
This series depicts a variety of girls and women in both modern and traditional costumes. Some hold fans, flowers or books, while others play musical instruments, read the newspaper or drink beverages. Nearly all have their heads turned slightly, looking off to the side. Many seem introspective or have an expression of anticipation. Few show strong emotions, and most seem content in their conditions and a bit aloof. This image shows an older girl, almost an adult but still cradling to her favorite doll as if to hold on to her innocence. Her elaborate combs and hair style suggests that she is dressed for a special occasion. Surveying the whole set of 36, one spunky teen does hold a fan behind her head, caught in an alluring dance movement, but her face still seems passive and distant. Another teen holds an open umbrella and clutches a book to her chest, the picture of an ingenue who seems surprised by both the brief shower and the world around her. Some of the children are studying diligently while others quietly pass their time playing with dolls, a pet cat or traditional Japanese games.
