Description
Born in Ohio on June 21, 1933, Charles Swanston moved to California in 1865, where he would work as a stock buyer. Charles would later establish his own butcher shop strictly for wholesale and meatpacking on his 200-acre land two miles from Sacramento. His land had a selection of hogs, bullocks (young bull), and sheep. Charles had three children, Lillian, George, and Frank with his wife Nancy M. Powers. Charles and his son George established Swanston & Son, a meatpacking business together as early as 1892. Charles died on April 15, 1911 returning from a trip to Bakersfield. This memorial fountain, costing $10,000 was built in 1923, and is dedicated to Charles by George. It reads “To the Pioneers” for the pioneers who settled the area, where it sits in William Land Park for whom George had a hand in founding.
