They are standing outside the old hospital, which had been converted to a children’s ward and a maternity ward, and they wear white uniforms with red trim and a letter M embroidered on the chest. Dr Irvine campaigned for a new maternity ward from the African District Council as the six bed ward dealt with 550 births in 1953. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established in 1922.
