It was estabilished by Abram Block, a native of Bohemia, who came to California in 1853. In 1853 -1858 he was a leading merchant in Nevada City. In 1878 Block invested in 96 acres of land known locally as the Gould Fruit Ranch. Mr. Levi A. Gould was noted horticulturist. It is believed that Gould was the first to ship California fruits to eastern states and foreign countries. Abram Block made a speciality of quality fruits, particularly pears, grown in his orchards. He annually shipped large quantities of many varieties of pears to eastern markets. In 1895 he was appointed to the California State Board of Horticulure.
