Paul Robeson, arrow, African American baritone who was stoned shortly before this occasion in Peekskill, New York, because of pro-Russian sentiments and speeches, waves to his supporters on arrival at Wrigley Field in Chicago to speak before a crowd of 11,700 on October 3, 1949. There was no disorder at the meeting. More than 2000 uniformed officers, all with night sticks, and 200 detectives in plain clothes, guarded the place.
