These photographs are contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Text written under photos: "First Aid instructions to Soldierettes Presidio Hospital 1916." Photo on page 266 top left shows one female recruit instructing another in how to put an arm in a sling. The photo on page 266 top right shows a male soldier instructing a female recruit on how to put an arm in a sling, while two other female recruits follow along in books.
Soldierettes were at the Presidio attending National Service School, a program set up by the Women's Section of the Navy League to increase the preparedness of women for war. The course included first aid, elementary hygiene, home care of the sick, marching and drilling. Students were being trained to support the Armed Forces.
