Title supplied by cataloger. This accident occurred during the construction of the Mellon Bank Center, located at 400 S. Hope Street. Workers sifted through the rubble left when a crane collapsed at a construction site at Fourth and Hope streets yesterday, killing two and injuring five others. The huge crane toppled into a 100-foot excavation, dragging down with it a wooden trailer that served as a temporary office. Russell Ellwood Nordstrom, 67, of Glendale, the construction engineer, and Frances Lemke, 59, of San Gabriel, the secretary for the Swinerton and Walberg Co. - the contractors for the 26-story building - were both killed. Cal-OSHA investigators said they would be working through the weekend to determine if the crane, reportedly owned by the Herrick Corp. of Hayward, had lifted too heavy a load or was structurally defective. Photograph dated May 16, 1981.
