Two figures can be seen in the pavilion. The Summer Palace began as the Garden of Clear Ripples (Qingyi yuan) under Emperor Qianlong in 1750, recreating styles from various palaces in China. It was renamed as the Summer Palace (Yihe yuan) in 1888, and served as a summer retreat for the Empress Dowager, Cixi. The slide was developed by the Photo Department, Tientsin Hui Wen Academy, Tientsin, China. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
