Description
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church during the Spanish Influenza outbreak of 1918-1920. Mass was held outside and parishoners wore masks. Also note that the priest has his back to the congregation and would have still recited the missal in Latin. After Vatican II in 1962-1965, masses were read in English with the priest facing the congregants. Note on back of photo: "Founded 1893." This photo 1919? Taken during outdoor service due to Spanish influenza [sic] epidemic - to avoid or discourage contagion [sic]. Note face masks on some persons on the porch at left of picture."
