Description
The 40 et 8, or the Forty and Eight is an honor society of the American Legion. The box car of the French Railways was chosen as the symbolic heart of the group. "40/8" was a cargo capacity sign emblazoned on the side of the box cars used to transport American ground troops of the First World War.
Photograph caption dated November 19, 1957 reads "Among Valley delegates to gathering of State 40 et 8 officials over weekend at Valley brewery were, left to right, Sevy W. Benson, chef de gare of Valley Voiture 1303; Ralph E. Goodall, grand chef de gare (seated); Jay Ulis, banquet committee chairman; James Corman, 7th District Councilman, and John Richter, brewery manager."
