Survival school student Marilyn Chandler clutches a rifle and runs through a forested area. She looks for cardboard cutouts hidden in the bushes that represent enemy positions. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. At the time, Chandler was a 29-year-old civilian from Wichita, Kansas who worked as a chemist for an unidentified paint company. Claflin also spent time studying the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces.
