Description
Right of way film (R/W no. 4407). Pedestrian safety, Los Angeles, 1938 June 22, about 3:30 pm. San Pedro Street from Manchester Avenue to Imperial Highway. "This picture and slides were prepared in connection with a project initiated by Franklin P. Buyer, Councilman of the 15th District, to eliminate the present hazardous conditions on San Pedro St. between Manchester Ave. and Imperial Highway. It is proposed to widen San Pedro St. 10 ft. on each side to provide sidewalks and parkways. The City of Los Angeles proposes to construct the walks and to pay the cost of all necessary reconstruction work if the right-of-way is voluntarily dedicated. In the pictures you will see children from the Samuel Gompers Junior High School walking in automobile traffic lanes, endangering their lives because of the lack of sidewalks. There are 1100 pupils attending this school, a large proportion of whom are forced to use San Pedro Street twice daily." "In response to inquiries made as to whether sewers will be constructed south of 108th St., and where they will be located, the following slides will show the propsed location" (6:25-6:41) [no slides].
