Description
This 1962 photograph captures a razed lot between J and K streets and Third and Fourth streets. In the distance are Dave’s Men’s Store at 230 K St. and the Club Café Tavern at 231 K St. Beyond that, one can see the spires of the Tower Bridge at Capitol Avenue and Front Street and the Western Hotel at 215 K St. The lot intimates the early stages of the redevelopment of Sacramento’s urban west side. Notice the superstructure of some of the city’s original buildings. In an effort to defeat endemic flooding, the city’s central business district was raised by 18 feet in 1863.
