Description
Photograph of "The Old Quarter" in Monterey, 1884. A long two-story building that appears to be a small hotel is visible to the left, while a horse-drawn carriage makes its way along the unpaved road towards the camera at center. The paint is peeling off the building and it features a number of doors, each flanked by a window to either side. The beginning of a dilapidated picket fence is visible in the left foreground, while a second building is visible in the right distance. "Served as barracks for the Mexican Army and also as a departmental capital in the 1940's. The last election for the departmental assembly under Mexican rule was held in the lower corner of this building May 26, 1846, shortly before the seizure of the Mexican State by the U.S."--A. Yorba.
