Description
Photograph of a lithograph by George Baker of San Diego and its bay, ca.1878. In the right corner, a steam locomotive pulls a train down a track that winds its way through the city and towards the water. In the foreground, several wagons are parked, and the mules used to pull them have be turned out to graze and run around a few men mounted on horseback keep watch over these animals. The city itself is composed of residential-looking buildings, although the spire of a church is visible. There is a long pier jutting out into the water, and several ships are floating on the bay plumes of smoke reveal that many of these ships might be steam-powered.
