Description
1989-1171. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. B, leaf 30. On the right side is a group of wooden buildings with a brick three storey building at the end; on the left is a dirt street; midway down the street is a horse-drawn wagon with two men sitting on the horse; in front of the brick building stand groups of men and on the second floor balcony four people and a child dressed in white are standing. "Photo MB" -- lower right corner. Also have negative: no.[#28,717 (4 x 5 in.) Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "The hotel was at first a 'two-story affair', called the Verandah Hotel.... Post-office established here for a short while. The Wells Fargo People were located at the south end of the Hasting Building, to the right of this picture..." Reproduction of photograph taken in 1863.
