Description
Taken in circa 1975, this photograph captures a view of the K Street Mall, looking east from the intersection Twelfth and K Streets. To the left of the frame are the venerable McCurry's Photography at 1131 K Street and Lauter and Son's Gifts. To the right of the frame are Bank of America at 1200 K Street and the Star Theater at 1214 K Street. To the immediate right is the Weinstock, Lubin and Company Department Store at 1120 K Street. Pedestrians take in a revamped K Street Mall, a symbol of both progress and derision during the 1970s and 1980s. Former assistant city manager Solon "Doc" Wisham told the Sacramento Bee, in December 1981, that they "made a mistake," conceding that the mall, constructed for 2.1 million dollars in 1969, was "built to save a retail area whose time had passed."
