Description
Dr. Charles van Bergen, left, and Prof. Arthur A. Woodward, Los Angeles museum scientists, are pictured comparing bird designs on pottery from a chart they arranged from researches to show the evolution of bird designs. The first two rows of patterns on the chart show how a picture of a bird gradually was simplified into a conventional s-shaped symbol as Indian art progressed, each different symbol representing 400 years of development. The last two rows shown on the chart depict evolution of another bird form into a simple line. By matching the pottery designs with the bird symbols, the scientists have been able to determine during what period the makers of the pottery lived. Furthermore, the symbols reveal the type of houses in which the makers lived as well as something of their way of life. Photo dated: July 28, 1931.
