Description
2 images. Old dog ... 21 years old, 26 March 1952. Bum, Staffordshire Terrier, owned by K.D. Miller, at Battersea Kennel, 1703 South San Gabriel Boulevard. Caption slip reads: "Photographer: Mercurio. Reporter: Ostler. Assignment: Old dog. 21: View of 21-year-old dog 'Bum', owned by K.D. Miller, 126 South Greenleaf Avenue, Whittier. Dog is boarded out at the Battersea Kennels, 1703 South San Gabriel Boulevard. 'Bum', according to L.J. Skinner, owner of the kennel, has never been sick. The animal is a Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). Supplementary material reads: "J.H.C. Stingle, Esq. For years we've been boarding out cat, when we leave town, at Battersea Kennels, 1703 South San Gabriel Boulevard, with the owner, Larkin J. Skinner. He tells me that 20 years ago when he came here and opened his kennels, a man by the name of K.D. Miller, head of the Miller Electric Company at Whittier, brought a dog by the name of Bum to him for boarding when Bum was 6 months old. Bum had been in and out of the kennels now for 20 1/2 years, being 21 years old today, which is quite an age for a dog ... 7 times 21 making him 147 years old. Larkin says its most unusual for a dog to live that long -- that he has affidavits to prove all, and now that the purp, a Stratfordshire (?) Terrier (pit bull to you) is about to die, he thinks it might make a picture and a story. It's in San Gabriel Valley. Battersea Kennels is for boarding only, not a dog hospital. During the war, Larkin boarded a cat for an Englishman who fought through the war and came back to retrieve his cat 6 or 7 years later. Wealthy pet owners of Pasadena and vicinity mostly use Battersea because they know their animals won't be in contact with sick pets. L.S.".
